The purpose of this project is to provide first aid to individuals affected by the war, to deliver medicine to medical institutions so that patients may be cured, and to prepare municipal facilities for winter.

  • Period: 1 Mar 2022 - 31 DEC 2023
  • Donor: German Federal Foreign Office, Help, NAK-karitativ, Aktion Deutschland Hilft
  • Budget: EUR 7,519,989.00
  • Region: Kyiv, Chernihiv, Kirovohrad, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, Cherkasy, Kherson, Zakarpattia, and Donetsk regions
  • Target group: War-affected civilian population

Food and hygiene parcels

When people were forced to leave their homes, move to another region, and start their lives anew, they first needed food and hygiene products. From May to June 2022, Help – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe and UAC provided 14 839 food and 14 839 hygiene parcels for households, 961 food and 961 hygiene parcels in the process of distribution, 1200 food and 1200 hygiene parcels are in the procurement process for different regions of Ukraine: Cherkasy, Kirovohrad, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, and Donetsk. Separately, 830 packages of baby diapers were provided to families in need.

However, it is worth understanding that the war continues, significantly affecting the population. According to the NBU’s estimates, 35% of Ukrainians are unemployed. The lack of work and means of subsistence affects both internally displaced persons and vulnerable categories of people affected by the war. Namely, families with many children, single-parent families, the poor, people with disabilities, etc. This time, distributions will be held in Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, and Mykolaiv regions. To improve logistics, the Help-Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe team involved local partners in the distribution – NGO “Light Affairs” in Mykolaiv, the Mariupol Humanitarian Headquarters in Zaporizhzhia, the Charitable Foundation “Ukrainian Friends” in Kharkiv and the NGO “Support Center” Opora” in Dnipro and Kharkiv.

Special attention is paid to the filling of sets. Products were added to the food set, with the help of which you can prepare basic dishes – cook borscht or some kind of porridge, bake bread, etc. Tea/coffee and various goodies were also added to the set, which should improve the mood of families on autumn evenings.

Cash for rent

The goal of this project’s component was to give internally displaced people money for the first three months so they could get settled and look for work without having to worry about housing.

One such family is Yulia and her children. When the war started, Julia and her family moved to Pomynnyk (Viktorivka) in the Cherkasy region. They did not think they would leave home for a long time, so they only took the most necessary things. Residents helped them find housing and equip it, and financial assistance for renting accommodation reduced the financial burden until Yulia returned to work as an online elementary school teacher.

375 households in the Cherkasy and Zaporizhzhia districts received financial assistance in November to rent suitable accommodation. The first financial aid portions have also been given to 500 families in the Kirovohrad region. Priority in providing service is offered to vulnerable categories of persons – families with many children, families with single parents, the poor, and persons with disabilities. The project helped with the provision of temporary shelter, and rent assistance for 874 households.

Psychosocial support and assistance to victims of gender-based violence

Our ability to handle and cope with the terrible circumstances brought on by war is aided by psychological support. Therefore as a response, from the outset of the project, psychological support has been a top priority. For people impacted by the war, 6475 psychological consultations have already been given. It can be obtained both online and offline in three cities of Ukraine (Uman, Zaporizhzhia, and Uzhhorod).

The project gives supporting victims of gender-based violence special attention. Help-Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe collaborates with the NGO “Girls” to offer victims psychological support and operate a public awareness and GBV prevention educational campaign. Help distribute PSS and individual and institutional support for 600 GBV survivors. Also, a GBV awareness media campaign was held in local media, covering 128514 beneficiaries

Medical support

Supporting the operation of the medical sector is one of the most crucial tasks during war. Medical supplies and medications were given as part of the project to the Uman Central City Hospital, Hospital No. 9 in Zaporizhzhia, and the multi-functional hospital in Mankivka. 7150 persons in total will be able to access medical care due to these deliveries.

Winterization

The team from Help in Ukraine has begun evaluating municipal facilities that can assist in winter preparation due to the possibility of destroying essential infrastructure.

A memorandum was signed with the Dmitryvska community, and equipment for pressure equalization in the water supply system was supplied. This will provide an opportunity to heat the kindergarten and solve problems with the water supply in 10 apartment buildings.

The Help team and Palanka Lyceum in Cherkasy Region agreed to a contract in November. Help will provide 141 energy-efficient three-chamber windows to the school for installation before the end of the year.

4 institutions were supported, 2 received 64 generators (for Sumska and Chersonska oblasts) which will be used for heating centers, and the Center of emergency medical aid and disaster medicine of Kyiv received 6 generators for 6 substations. According to preliminary data, 415 314 beneficiaries have been supported so far.

Hotline

One of the components of this project was prompt provision of information on the hotline.

Thus, internally displaced persons and people affected by the war could find out:

  • where to find housing or temporary shelter;
  • information about traveling by car, buses, shuttle taxis;
  • where to find a bomb shelter;
  • information for parents with children about kindergartens, online education, etc.;
  • where there is a working shop or where you can get humanitarian aid;
  • information on providing psychological support.

Within the framework of the project, 7,759 consultations were provided through the hotline.

Housing construction

The buildings destroyed during the hostilities are now undergoing comprehensive reconstruction. The village of Nova Basan in Chernihiv district was occupied at the beginning of the war. Some of the houses were almost completely destroyed as a result of the fierce fighting that took place in the area.

Together with the District 1 Foundation Help has restored 13 private houses of residents of the Nova Basan territorial community, which were severely damaged or even completely destroyed in the early spring of 2022. In accordance with current building codes, the houses were built using new technology.

In addition, 13 houses for IDPs who lost their homes were built in the Nova Basan community. Professionals who are needed by the community can move into one of these houses. Applications for the housing competition are currently being accepted.
